Elle fut la troisième des cinq filles de Chiswell et de Nancy (Nanaire) Witcher Keene.
1897, elle épousa Robert Gould Shaw II.
1903, elle divorça de Robert Gould Shaw II.
1906, elle s'établit en Angleterre où elle fit la connaissance de Waldorf Astor, 2e vicomte Astor et, ils se marièrent.
1919-1945, elle fut la deuxième femme à siéger à la Chambre des communes pour la circonscription de Plymouth du Parti conservateur, mais ses opinions anticatholiques et antisémites firent chuter sa popularité après la Seconde guerre mondiale.
1964, elle décéda au château de Grimsthorpe situé dans le Lincolnshire en Angleterre.
