Il fut le fils de Robert et de Nancy, née Langhorne.
1898, il naquit à Beverly dans l'État du Massachusetts.
1903, après le divorce de ses parents, il s'installa en Angleterre avec sa mère.
Il fit ses études à la Shrewsbury School.
1917, fut nommé sous-lieutenant du collège militaire royal (CMR) dans les Horse Guards.
1918-1919, il fut transféré au (voir en anglais, Guards Machine Gun Regiment).
1919, il fut promu lieutenant dans les Horse Guards.
1920, il fut transféré à la réserve des officiers des Horse Guards.
1921, il rejoignit l'effectif régulier des Horse Guards.
1929, son alcoolisme croissant l'obligea à prendre sa retraite.
1931, il fut emprisonné pendant six mois pour délits homosexuels et son nom fut rayé de la liste de l'armée.
1970, il se suicida.
