Birth
James Percival Sutton was born on the 31st March 1899 in South Africa.
Service in the Great War
He joined the South African Infantry and served as a Private, Service No. 14189 and went to fight in the Great War, he was killed at Kemmel Hill on the 2nd May 1918 aged just 19 years. His grave / memorial is at Ref. panel 15-16 & 16A, Cemetry Ypres ( Menin Gate ) Memorial. He was the son of William Ashley and Amaranth Philothea Sutton of Benoni South Africa. He also served in the German East African Campaign.
Birthday Book
He was given a birthday book which has a lot of his school friends names and birth dates in it , it was given to Ethne Sutton (Spence ) his niece in 1929 by his mother Amaranth and she passed it on to her daughter Virginia, who still has it In the birthday book are names of other Suttons in the family . .His service medal (or Death Penny as it became known ) was given to his other niece Dulce who in turn passed it on to her daughter Jeanne who lives in Springs, South Africa. Jeanne passed it on to her twin brother Peter . He then sent it to Virginia in 2022 and she proudly displays it . In 2014 Virginia purchased a ceramic poppy which was part of thousands of these poppies that were on display in the grounds of the Tower of London England . Afterwards the poppy was sent to Virginia and again she has it on display .
