Mary (Mame) Ellen Burke (1870-1957) by Selma Louise Freudenberg (1921- ): Mame would come to 603 Garfield Avenue, Jersey City from Swathmore, PA and visit the Norton's with Josephine (May) Veronica and Bertha Burke. She would always bring a big pot of beans and a salad. They would be coming to visit May and Bertha's half sister, Mary Margaret Burke, who was married to Thomas Patrick Norton I, my father-in-law. Tom and Mary would invite us over for dinner when Mame came over. Source: Selma Louise Freudenberg (1921- ), Oral Testimony, 1998
Mary (Mame) Ellen Burke (1870-1957) by Thomas Patrick Norton (1920- ): Mary (Mame) Ellen Burke (1870-1957) raised children from Richard Patterson's first marriage. She has no direct genetic descendents. Later she raised Bertha Burke and Josephine (May) Veronica Burke, the children of her brother. The children were put in an orphanage by her brother, John (Black Jack) Burke. They lived in Swathmore, Pennsylvania where Aunt May (Josephine Burke aka Veronica Norton) dated Villanova students. After Richard Patterson died in 1930, Bertha took a job in the insurance business and May worked as a dental assistant. They both lived with aunt Mame. Mame wore thick glasses from cataracts and had the cataracts removed at a later date. When May and Bertha were in their 40s, Bertha married Steve Prasky. Once, Otto Winblad drove Tom Norton and Sally Freudenberg to Virginia for a vacation. On the way back, Otto stopped in Maryland and they visited Steve and Bertha. Otto also found May in Swathmore, PA on the same trip. My father, Thomas Patrick Norton I, was depressed when his wife died and my brother, Jimmy, had to leave the military to take care of him. While Jimmy was living there, dad announced his engagement to Veronica (May) Burke. Jimmy Norton was also going to take care of Nana Patterson and took her to 603 Garfield Avenue, Jersey City to live with my father. That's where she fell and died. Note: This was the first and only marriage for both of them. The children may be adopted. Source: Thomas Patrick Norton (1920- ), Oral Testimony, 1998
