Richard left home at an early age to go to sea. He went to California in the gold rush, made a lot of money, but was reportedly defrauded of it. In Australia he apparently went to Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie before settling in southern NSW/NE Victoria. Married twice - first wife (Georgina) died of pneumonia; Richard always blamed it on her having to bring the cows in while raining heavily, so he hated cows after that. Georgina seems to have been only 14 when they married. It was said that Lord Balfour reported to Richard's family in England that he thought he had seen Richard walking down the street in Australia, so it appears that Lord Balfour was on fairly close terms with the family. It is not clear how this information came back to Richard or his wife and children. Death certificate (#3062) states cause of death as "senility" (duration 2 years) and "exhaustion" (duration 1 week).
