Il fut le fils aîné et héritier du roi Alexandre V d’Iméréthie et de sa seconde épouse Thamar Abschidzé.
1752, il dut faire face à l’hostilité du puissant Rostom Ier, prince de Racha, et il abandonna sa capitale pour se réfugier à Akhaltsikhé dans le Samtskhé.
1753, avec l’appui des Ottomans, il retrouva son trône.
Il s’allia au début au prince Katsia II de Mingrélie dont il épousa sa sœur Mariam et il s’appuya sur la petite noblesse pour contrer les grands féodaux.
Pendant son règne, il parvint à rétablir un pouvoir fort et à étendre son autorité sur la Géorgie occidentale, malgré son propre grand-père maternel, Levan Abaschidzé qui n’hésita pas à entrer en rébellion, ainsi que Rostom Ier, prince de Racha et Katsia II de Mingrélie.
Il désigna comme son héritier le fils de son frère Artchil, son neveu David qui devint roi sous le nom de Salomon II.
