Il fut le fils aîné de Johann Carl et de Maria Karolina, la fille de Michael Johann von Althann.
Il étudia le droit à l'université de Leipzig et à l'université de Göttingen.
1788, il épousa Maria Christina, comtesse de Thun und Hohenstein.
Il fut chambellan à la cour impériale autrichienne.
Il fut l'un des principaux mécènes et soutien de Ludwig van Beethoven et de nombreuses compositions musicales du compositeur lui furent dédiées pour son mécénat, son amitié et sa générosité.
