His daughter Alison says: "He is the best dad in the whole world. He's kind, unselfish, funny and a truly amazing person." Erich remembers him from holidays in the 1970s and 1980s as intelligent and funny. He used to keep the children amused for hours in the car playing "I Spy". Tests of memory used to interest him. Erich remembers several times he would memorise the order of an entire pack of cards. Afterwards he would hand the pack to somebody. He would ask them to deal them into a pile, one by one, and he would name the card just before it became visible. He used to love to sing.
