My Grandfather Reynolds

James Wooster Reynolds Sept 23, 1859 Father Hiram Reynolds Mother Eliz Hines Grandpa was born in Maryland and at an early age his parents moved to a small town in southern Ohio, Felicity I think. His father was a musician and when the Civil war broke out he left as a band leader in the Army of the Potomac, leaving to his care his three sisters Kate, Laura and Ettie and his younger brother Charlie. Later his father came home and wanted to take him back as a drummer boy in one of the regiments but his mother refused. He was eleven years old at the time. Grandpa was always sorry that he missed the war. He got a job to support the family hauling chairs from a factory in Georgetown to Cincinnati. This was a two day trip by wagon and a stopover had to be made at a tavern on the way. He told of staying there one cold rainy night, soaking wet and with a heavy chest cold and the innkeeper giving him a shot of whiskey, how it warmed him and made him feel so good. He always liked whiskey afterward and would go on a tear once in a while but it never kept him from work. After the war he began peddling chairs from town to town and that is how he met my grandmother. She was 18 and he nine years older. He had the reputation of being a good dancer and it was said he could work all day and dance all night. When he married my grandmother they moved to Adams County in the hills outside of Portsmouth where he raised tobacco far a year. It was very successful but Grandma would not stay because of the snakes. Copperheads and rattlesnakes were numerous and grandma hated them. The house was set on pillars in the rear and level with the road in the front and she said when you moved you could hear the rattling beneath the floor. Grandmpa told of reaching in to cut a stalk of tobacco and feeling something withe beneath your hand. He would toss it out and cut off its head before it would coil to strike. One day the stake struck back and bloodied his hand and he panicked and ran for the house, then realized it couldn't have bitten him as it head was off, it was only a reaction. They went back to live with Grandpa Richards where he helped work the farm but was never too happy and finally was induced by his sister Laura who lived in Cheviot to come to Cincinnati. He owned his own team of horses and rented them out and his services at hauling coal and gravel. One of the trips he told was of hauling coal to the brothers of Mt. Alverno. He said it was a weeks work for a number of wagons. They would take all morning to get there, get a lunch from the Brothers, then be back in time for a short city trip. Later he drove a horse car, then was a foreman at the City Stables and in his later years was a cleanup man for the U.S. Bung Company. He worked there until the depression when the company went out of business. I think he would have lived longer than he did he could have kept working for even in his late seventies he felt ashamed he was not working. He died on Holy Thursday. They found him dead in his rocker where he was reading the paper. It was 1932. My Recollections: Grandpa was a six foot thin man but big framed. He was hawk faced but very good looking, and always wore a mustache. After he stopped working we would go to town to get him and bring him to our home where we always had some project under way. I can remember at eighty years he would still turn concrete shovel for shovel with brother Joe and myself. We spent much time together and I loved to listen to his stories which were quite often humorous. He told of making cherry bounce (cherry wine) when he lived in Adams County and of throwing the cherry stones out when the wine had quit working. A rooster came by and ate them and he said it was comical to watch the rooster try to walk after the alcohol had taken effect. I don't think he ever had any formal religion, but was what was termed at the time a Free Thinker. He had a deep love of nature an loved to go into our yard and work with the flowers and trees. On his father side he was of Welsh descent.
