Opgevoed aan het Engelse hof v Eduard I. Werd op 12 jarige leeftijd Graaf v Holland, maar overleed 4 jaar later. In die periode gedroeg Wolfert v Borselen zich als heer en meester tot hij in aug 1299 te Delft gelyncht werd. Na Wolfert werd neef Jan v Avesnes regent. Na dood v Jan I volgt Jan v Avesnes hem op als graaf Jan II. Begraven in de abdij te Rijnsburg.
