Described as 'Evangelisch' but confirmed Jewish ancestry on his father's side.

'Enobled' in 1907. He was a Colonel on 20 April 1909. He commanded the 87th Infantry Brigade from 21 February 1911 to 19 November 1912. He was a Major-General on 19 November 1912. He commanded the 35th Division from 25 November 1914 to 20 January 1918. He was made a Lieutenant-General on 6 June 1916. He was active in Posen in 1918. He was a member of the People's People's Party of Germany.

His eldest son was killed in 1915 as a lieutenant. Fathered Robert Karl Hahn by another woman as well as a daughter.
